Local Web Site Offers Solution to Fund Raising Challenge

Recent national disasters have forced local non-profit agencies to compete harder for needed contributions. Moreover, there are more and more non-profits seeking funding each year, creating more competition for available dollars. From 1996 to 2004, the number of all public charities nationally grew 53.5 percent from 535,888 to 822,817, according to the National Center for Charitable Statistics. Walter Sczudlo, executive vice-president of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), recently told industry publication The NonProfit Times, "What concerns us is that this proliferation of charities is creating a huge competition for donor dollars. There are so many charities now going after so few dollars and it's getting parsed out so finely."

In addressing this need, Denver’s Premier Online Business Card Directory has launched an exciting new fund raising program for Denver area non-profits. The web site, a production of Garage Sale Industries, LLC, features many of the Denver area’s top business professionals. The recent addition of the fundraising element allows civic-minded business leaders to help local non-profit organizations while at the same time, promoting their own business. Mark Crowley (recently named the 2005 Colorado Broadcasters Association’s Broadcast Citizen of the year), host of Community Affairs USA, heard locally on 710 KNUS Radio, calls the non-profit program a “Brilliant concept…Cause Related Marketing.”

A recent Business Week Online article quoted a WellsFargo/Gallup Small Business survey which found that “nearly 9 of 10 small business owners say they give money to nonprofit organizations in their communities. Almost 6 in 10 say their employees contribute time to these groups.”

Barbara Bailey, owner of Garage Sale Industries, said, “Since most non-profits enjoy the support of many local small businesses, this program is a real Win-Win. It takes monies the business is already spending for promotion, and directs it to achieve maximum benefit.”

Garage Sale Industries works directly with non-profits to set up fundraising campaigns. For each annual Business Card Ad they sell on (to members or non-members), the non-profit receives 33% of the sale price. In addition, the non-profit receives free promotion, with a click-through link to their web site directly below their supporter’s business card. The non-profit also receives 33% of the funds generated when those Business Card Ads are renewed, giving a donation year after year, with no further effort on the part of the charity. The work they do today will continue to generate funds for the non-profit, literally, for years to come.

As part of their commitment to the community, Garage Sale Industries is always seeking information from charitable organizations on upcoming Community Events and Fundraisers. Information provided is included in the twice-weekly webcasts (Sunday 10-noon, Wednesday 8-10pm) and/or featured on the web site. The webcast talk format is lively, fueled by listeners calling in to buy, sell & trade their treasures FREE.
